Our Guest of Honor:
Erika Polson
Media
"Paris, International Expats: Connected, But To What?"
Migration and Media In A Global Age
Perspectives And Practices Of International
Expatriates
Interactive.
Let's have a look at how international expatriates and global nomads use media, global connectedness of information and media technologies to link to create communities, compared with other different migrant groups.
Erika Polson, is a doctoral candidate in international communications at Pennsylvania State University. She will discuss connections between national-identity, personal identity, and media for migrating peoples. Much has been written about specific national or ethnic groups in migration, but there is much to be understood about the perspectives and practices of international expatriates.
As a 24 year expat (next week is my 24th anniversary), I'm fascinated by this subject. Hope to see you on Sunday. - Patricia

Our Guest of Honor:
Fred Collay

(A rough translation. You've been in France a week, a month, a year, a century (how boring Paris can be...) and you work with the French....It's an experience that you'd like to share with others?)
Fred Collay has been a language trainer for six years and decided to become self-employed (started up his own business in Paris) two years ago. He has a broad background which helps him in designing teachers' programs and activities. He is especially gifted in creating games, situations and topics.
After pursuing studies in journalism, history and communications, Fred moved from France to England, where he began his teaching career as an Extra English Teacher. Back in France in 2000, he moved forward, still teaching in schools and working in companies such as France Telecom and Renault. Then in 2005 Fred left schools behind him and started his own company C.L.E.F.(Clubs Linguistiques de Experience et de Formation) and secured clients such as Hilton, eBay, Mederic (insurance) and Crédit Mutuel. Fred’s clients have learned that they can expect good teaching (in French and in English) and a high level of interpersonal involvement.
On Thursday, for those who missed Fred's talk in February, he will also answer a few questions from "would be teachers" and offer brief concrete advice, based on his own experiences, in setting up a language business.

Soiree Litteraire et Gastronomique
Anthony Steyning is the author of three acclaimed novels. He is also an essayist, critic and playwright whose plays have been performed in Montreal and New York.
From Anthony: "Over the years I seem to have developed a probing type of writing that digs very deep and very wide, curious to find out where the beauty and all the hurt began. First cutting through the crap, I frequently stumble upon how matters really stand in relation to each other--- issues, trends or conditions, ostensibly linked or not but in the end affecting us in a fashion that isn't always evident. Next, I attempt to relive my findings through half-real or fully fictional characters placed in some sort of dramatic context, recreating everything I've put my fingers on while attempting to involve the same core dynamics that produced these in the first place. In other words, real bits of history felt and re-lived from the sidewalks up.". His first novel, "The Vortical Man," was published in Paris and led to Anthony meeting Lawrence Durrell, who became a supporter of his work. His latest novel is "Budapest My Love". Anthony Steyning currently resides in southern Spain. Visit: www.AnthonySteyning.com

" The Long Shadow "
The Long Shadow is a sensual, romantic mystery with roots in the pre and WWII era of Paris, Berlin, which reach into current time, weaving a tangled and dangerous web around François, a Paris magazine publisher, and his Irish-American Taos, New Mexico photographer lover, Claudia.
Pursued on two continents, François and Claudia are totally in the dark about why, until Claudia stumbles onto a series of frightening clues which suggest an ugly resurgence of Nazi terrorism from an unsuspected part of the globe. How does François' father, well-known Jewish artist Elie Rosenberg, a former student of the Bauhaus, figure in this? And what do Latinos and native Americans have to do with neo-Nazis?
Claudia Carroll, who writes under the pen name CJ Carroll, received a late-date Masters in Arts in Education from Harvard (2002) and has engaged in various forms of journalism, creative writing and art for many years. She is working on a sequel to The Long Shadow. Visit

Our Guest of Honor
Y. Euny Hong
Journalist and Author
" Kept: A Comedy Of Sex And Manners "
Kept: A Comedy of Sex and Manners tells the story of Judith Lee, a 26 yr old Korean American Yale grad living in NYC who has been raised to believe she is an aristocrat. Having never learned to make herself likeable or useful, she incurs monstrous debts. Judith´s seedy aunt introduces her to Madame Tartakov, a beautiful, harpyish Russian emigre and former ballerina who faked Jewish ancestry to gain asylum in the US, and who now runs a brothel of high-class courtesans out of her East 62nd street townhouse. She will pay off all of Judith´s debts in exchange for two years of service at said brothel--and she´ll have to tie her tubes. Seems like a stiff price, but how could a snob like Judith possibly resist the opportunity to live with girls descended from the likes of Vlad the Impaler and Ethelred the Unready?
Y. Euny Hong was the first-ever television columnist for the US Edition of The Financial Times. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal Europe, The International Herald Tribune, The New Republic, The Washington Post;, The Boston Globe, and The Forward, among others. A Yale University graduate (Philosophy), she was recently awarded a Fulbright Young Journalists Award. Euny is working on her second novel. Please visit www.eunyhong.com

Our Guest of Honor:
Bernadette Martin
Brand Strategist
Writing Your Bio - The Ultimate Networking Tool
The bio has many purposes and can be used in these situations: following a networking event and meeting a key person, you send a follow-up email with your bio attached. A resume might be too heavy (overload), and a bio is easier to read and “digestible”. A second possible scenario…. send your bio in advance of an initial meeting with an individual where you want to set the stage. This can save a lot of time, as once you do meet, you can “cut to the chase”. A third use of the bio is to post on association, club, alumni, company, and personal sites. There are many more ways to use the bio which can even be sent with your resume to round it out and “soften” the edges. My personal opinion is that the bio is a key element in your brand tool kit…..a “must have”. Bios are my area of expertise. I have helped many clients write their bios and tell their story in a compelling way.
Bernadette Martin is a multi-lingual Brand Strategist with a 15 year career working in various aspects of brand management. This profession has taken her to Asia, Europe and the U.S. where she has held positions in corporate, agency and academic environments. A move to Paris in 2002 coincided with a transition from corporate branding to personal branding where her clients are entrepreneurs, solopreneurs and individuals in career transition. She helps clients develop their professional and personal brand whether in a verbal, written or online context. Bernadette has worked with more than 200 clients developing their brand positioning, messaging and image. Her emerging consulting practice is Visibility Branding; Please visit: www.visibilitybranding.com

Relooking: Changing The Way People See YOU
Many people wonder what relooking is. We live in a society of image and appearance. We are often judged and categorized at first glance. One's self image is as important as the people looking at you. Therefore we need to be satisfied with our appearance.
The role of the Image Consultant is to help us when there is a problem. The work of an Iimage Consultant is to help us to be at peace with ourselves - in terms of how we look - and to help us to show ourselves to our best positive advantage.
Bronia Kratzheimer is originally from Vienna, Austria and previously worked as a language teacher. She is a ployglot: French, Italian, German and English. She has worked intensively with other relooking consultants and also has a background in the theatre, which contributed to the development of her method.
Relooking is as important for men as for women, especially as in terms of professional image and dress codes. Contact Bronia on 01 46 28 97 14 .
